George Drummond (Senior Residential Assistant)
Studying PhD Mathematics
Secondary School: Nelson College
Hi Guys! My name is George and I’m the Head RA here at Bishop Julius. Originally from England, I moved to Nelson in 2006 and attended Nelson College between 2009 and 2013 (Yes, schools existed back then) before coming to UC in 2014. Here began my Bish journey.
To me, Bishop Julius represents the perfect balance of work and fun and has been the source of many good years. Being an RA at Bishop Julius and helping younger students find their place at university has been a hugely rewarding part of my life and I greatly enjoy being part of this place.
Now studying towards a PhD in Mathematics I still believe that BJH is the best place to be while undertaking your studies. I can often be found, with my head in a maths book, playing guitar or interacting with the fantastic young people that come to BJH.
Studying Mechanical Engineering
High School: King’s High School
Hello everyone, this is my 2 nd year at UC, and I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering. I was originally from the south-east part of China. I came to New Zealand and started my high school study in Dunedin in 2013.
Being an international student from China meant I was an outgoing and sociable person. I enjoy getting involved in a variety of extra-mural activities. Tennis is my biggest passion and besides that I also like swimming and badminton. I also enjoy spending my spare time playing the piano. Bishop Julius is a great place to start your future study at University. Its diversity, inclusive nature and being a good environment for academic success is what makes it so ideal to all people.
Studying Teaching (Primary)
Secondary School: Napier Boys High School
Hey guys. I’m currently in my first year of studying primary teaching and loving it. I’ve lived in Napier my whole life but have loved living in Christchurch for the past two years.
I’ve played lots of sports throughout my life such as football and volleyball but mainly canoe polo. I loved making the most of the social sports and interhall sport competitions during my year there. I love my TV shows and movies and look forward to spinning a yarn about them with you. I really enjoyed my time at Bishop Julius meeting new people, making friends, studying and look forward to meeting you all next year.
Studying Software Engineering
Secondary School: ACG Parnell College
Hi, I’m currently in my second year studying Software Engineering at UC. I was born and raised in Auckland, and moving down to Christchurch was a surprise to me as it is so flat.
I have a passion for travelling, food videos on YouTube, and cycling and walking around Christchurch. Bishop Julius is great community where you can meet new people and settle into for your first year of uni. University can be daunting, and Bishop Julius offers a great balance of relaxing and studying. I’ve had many unforgettable memories during my first year here. I hope to help you settle into your first year of university!
From the Catlins
Secondary School: St Hilda’s, Dunedin
Hey. I’m currently going into my second year of engineering. I was born and raised in the Catlins, South Otago and attended boarding school at St Hilda’s, Dunedin. Being apart of a small rural community developed my love for the outdoors through hunting and Land Search and Rescue.
Well at the hall you’ll typically find me having some long chats after dinner with a hot choccy in hand. I’ve found Bishop Julius a great place to live well studying, with the close community feel and support from all directions. For me, the hall quickly became a home away from home. I hope you also find yourself at home at Bish.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Secondary School: Onslow College
Gidday! I’m going into my second year of Engineering at UC, and I’m absolutely loving it so far. Leaving the wind and hills of Wellington to come down to Christchurch was a bit of a change, but BJH gave me a great environment to settle in to.
When I’m not outside playing sport or exercising (or trying not to get hit by busses on my longboard), you’ll find me mucking around on my guitar or playing the piano in the music room. The experience I had at the hall in my first year was truly one of a kind; I have made friends for life. I hope to help provide to you the amazing time I had!
Studying Software Engineering
Secondary School: Nayland College
Hey. I’m in my second year at the University of Canterbury studying Software Engineering. I’ve always been interested in maths, problem solving and manipulating computers to do awesome things. Bishop Julius provided me with an easy transition to life away from home. The students and staff are super friendly, and it has the perfect balance between study and fun.
If sports is one of your main hobbies as it is for me, you’ll be thrilled with the awesome opportunities to get involved in social and competitive sports for the hall. The best part is living with so many amazing people from all sorts of backgrounds, many of whom will become life long friends. My year at Bishop Julius has been one of the best, I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have.
Studying Social Work and Te Reo
Secondary School: Burnside High School
Hi, my name is Steph, I'm in my third year at university. I was an RA in 2018 and loved getting to know such a variety of people!
I have previously worked as a youth mentor at a high school alongside my studies; I have a passion for working with youth and I love getting to know people from all different backgrounds. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Arts with a focus on Te Reo Māori and social work. I love adventures and road trips, and although I cannot swim and I hate sand, the beach is still my favourite place.
Studying Biology and Environmental Science
Secondary School: Freyberg High School
Hey guys! I’ve just finished my first year at university and am keen to help you all make the most of your fresher year. I was born in Napier but really I’m from the grassy plains of the Manawatu and therefore can have a great chat about cows or bucket hats.
My passions lie in science communication, space, and travel. Bishop Julius is a great place to get integrated with the challenges of university life with plenty of support. I look forward to helping you find your niche at Canterbury and the hall, as so many things are on offer.
