How to make a post on the principal’s announcement blog

Thsi is how you make a post on the principal’s announcement area on the home page. It’s easy.

First, login at www.bishopjulius.ac.nz/wp-admin
(ID = admin pass = password123)

Top left in the menu column click announcements > new announcement. You’ll be in the announcement editing area.

The simple steps

  1. Write a heading for the post. This will be the web address. (the-header-you-wrote.html)
  2. Write the post in ‘visual’ mode, not the ‘html’ mode. (Find those two tab choices top right of the text edit box . Use text formatting, eg. ‘heading 3′ for a subhead.
  3. Insert an image. Any size but must be in the jpg format. (See notes below.)
  4. Click ‘publish’ on the right. You can view the opening words of your post from the home page. Your image will have been automatically turned into a cool thumbnail . Click the summary to go inside to the full version of your post.

How to insert an image

These steps might look daunting, but be assured, it’s all easy.

  • Get your image ready and save as a jpg.
  • Open up the admin page for the post you’ve written and set the editing area to ‘visual’ mode.
  • Put the cursor on the left of the first word in the post.
  • Above the text edit box are icons to use to insert media, like images. Click the ‘add image’ icon.
  • A popup pops up (Duh.) Choose ‘browser uploader’ mode, not ‘flash uploader’.
  • Choose the image on your hard drive and click ‘upload’.
  • You’ll have options in the popup box. If you want to, fill in things like caption etc.
  • There are radio buttons that let you position and size the image in your post. Choose ‘left’ and ‘full size’. Then click ‘insert’. The popup will disappear. You’ll be at the post editing area.
  • And you’re done!

On the right of the post admin page, click the blue ‘publish’ button. And then view your post on the home page by clicking the words ‘Bishop Julius’ at the top left of the post admin page. That will show you the home page and post summary (with that image reduced automatically to a thumbnail) and you can click the summary to go to the post inside the site.

As I said, these steps might look daunting, but be assured, it’s all easy.

Someone has left a comment … you have to deal with it

Anyone can comment on your blog posts. But they’ll only appear when / if you approve them.

Watch for spammers. They might come with unusual names, which is a clue to their real intent. They might make a generous, general comment about the site, which is also a clue to the same thing. In all cases they will have LINKED their comment to their website. If that site is selling junk, the comment is spam.

In the Principal’s admin home page there’s a place where all comments are held for his approval. Every now and then check and see if there are genuine comments waiting for your OK or spam which you should mark as spam or delete.
