Student Rooms

Just to keep everyone informed and how you are all helping with rescue efforts here in Christchurch:

I mentioned earlier that we are hosting 56 Police Officers from Australia we have placed these officers in the Mabel Hendrie and Cranmer Buildings. Those few students who were not able to put their possessions in their locked wardrobe we have done this for you. The cleaners have also collected your dirty or wet washing and will wash it for you and keep it safe. The room occupant is given a key to your room only and never a wardrobe key.

Post February Earthquake

Bishop Julius has been cleared by Structural Engineers and we are structurally unaffected by the recent earthquakes.

Students are reminded to keep up with the happenings at the University of Canterbury by the UC webpage.

Help is coming from all corners of the world and you will be delighted to know that 56 Australian Police Officers will be staying at the hall and helping with the CBD Rescue efforts.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Bishop held up magnificently in the shake!

The earthquake was very strong, here in Christchurch. I have felt a few in my day, on the West Coast, where they are quite common. (And Danny from Wellington said he’s the same.) I didn’t think the rocking was going to stop. My laptop sat like a rock on my desk, but some of my textbooks slid off and in the darkness I could hear my pens scattering on the floor. But good old Bishop Julius — it all held together! No damage to the buildings! And the staff were fantastic. Everyone looked after each other as the shakes kept coming during the morning.

The girls next to me were SO supportive

I have to say that I was pretty scared when the earthquake hit Christchurch. At first didn’t know what was happening. My bed was shaking and lurching and it was pitch dark (by the time I opened my eyes!) and I was disoriented. But after a few seconds I was wide awake and thought, “OMG this must be an earthquake!” The noise was scary. But it was over in a few seconds. I went to my door and the girls in the next rooms were all in the corridor. They were so reassuring. I think all of them had been through quakes before. (The complete Mainland education?) They were not alarmed. We quickly filed down the stairs and outside and the others were there to. Everyone was so helpful and good to everyone else. I’m glad I had friends around me that morning. Called home and told them I was fine. And I was!

It took me some time to figure out Christchurch was the epicenter

My first thought was, “If the quake is this strong here, it must be REALLY big on the ‘Coast!” I come from the West Coast and I have always been told there are no major fault lines on the Canterbury Plains. there are plenty in the Southern Alps of course, and they shake the other side of the island all the time. (It seems.) So I naturally assumed the main shake was in the alps and that it must be VERY big there if it was this big so far away in Christchurch. Imagine how surprised I was ah hour or so later when the radio news told us that the center was less than 15km from Bishop Julius!
